Is there any technique of protecting your folders on windows explorer, say, applying authentication, wherein before a user can open a folder he/she should key-in the password just like a saved docs. in MS word? Thanks in advance

I don't know of anything that does exactly what you are asking for. There are programs out there such as Folder Lock that can password lock files and folders:

I have this program, but I don't recommend it. I only put it out there as an example that such programs exist. You might also be able to use an encryption program such as TrueCrypt, which I do recommend. However, with TrueCrypt, each user would be responsible for password locking and unlocking their own file folder. If they forget to lock up before the next user comes along, the whole system breaks down.

Finally, it might be possible to set the file ACLs so that only one user account has access to them. I don't know enough about ACLs in Windows to be certain. If such a scheme were possible, each user would have to login to their account and lock, or logout, when finished.

I do recommend Folder Castle (http://www.magneticsoft.com/FolderCastle.shtml) instead Folder Lock. It is very easy to use, but effective tool.

in windows the only thing you can do is remove and give access to certain users and groups.
i've never used any of the given software above so i would reccomend if your that serious to make it a hidden file and put it somewhere you will remember and if you want to access it change the folder view options.
