Windows Vista Aero - Not Working

I purchased an HP computer (model m8120n) with Windows Vista Home Premium for almost one year without a problem until now. In other words, Windows Aero was working perfectly fine.

On Sunday, for some reason, my Windows Aero no longer works and I don't know why.

I did attempt to follow the steps in one of the help pages (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....-it-again/). When I was in the System Properties -- Performance Options, the two checkbox options ("Enable desktop composition" and "Enable transparent glass") that I am suppose to select are NOT appearing.

I've also tried to restore Aero by doing a System Restore with no luck.

Any clue on how to restore Windows Aero?

Did you by chance read the comments section after the article? Some readers have found workarounds with varying success.
You do have Aero enabled as your Theme, right?

Originally, when Windows Aero was working, the "Windows Aero" was selected as my color scheme. Now, that option is not available.

My Theme is set to "Modified Theme", but that was done automatically because I changed my desktop wallpaper. And Aero DID WORK.

Go to Control panel.Open personalization. Is your theme Vista? If not reset it to Vista. All changes are done in this location.
That being said,to run aero you require sufficient ram.If not your computer will reset as Vista basic. You require home premium to get all the bells and whistles. however,I still had to upgrade my ram to enable aero to run smoothly.
Sometimes when working and you have a number of windows open, you can lose your aero features.Close some windows and reset.Check your color scheme and enable Vista aero.
All can be done under control panel personalization.Hope this helps.

My computer, HP Pavillion m8120n with Vista Home Premium, has all the required specs to run Windows Aero. I've had this computer for almost a year. Like I said in my first post, Windows Aero was working fine until last Sunday.

I'm pretty sure I have all the updated drivers (as I install updates from time-to-time when being prompt). I've looked around on the internet for a solution, but none seems to work for me.

JanLam.Sorry I couldn't help you.Reviewed your specs for your desktop. You have more GB than the original Vista computers. That is not to say that aero cannot cease functioning. It may not be the cause for you,but it should still be ruled out for others having similar problems

I had the same problem.
System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Adjust for best performance and apply.
Then Adjust for best Appearance and apply.
Control Panel > Personalization > Window Color and Appearance > Open classic appearance properties for more color options.
Vista Aero is there. Select Vista Aero.

I have all the options to switch Windows Aero on, but when my computer restarts it's back to Windows Standard. It used to work fine for about a year until last week. I installed the latest Microsoft security updates on that day, so I don't know if it has anything to do with that? I tried uninstalling the updates, I uninstalled other programs that I think may cause the problem, and I tried everything else in this discussion. Any other ideas?

hheymans-Note the date of the original post. I would hope that after 4wks, the issue was resolved satisfactorily.
The above replier was using the classic control page which I do not use. Go to control panel>personalization,>
color and appearance> and then after adjusting that>theme and click on windows Vista.Always click on apply.
Problem should now be resolved. Now if your taskbar is full of browser names there is too much strain on the
system and again the computer will revert back to basic.

It would help to know some system details, here are steps to get some basic information about your computer:
1. Open the System applet.
In Control Panel: Click "System and Maintenance" and click System.
In the Classic Control Panel: Double click System.
2. Post the following pieces of information:
Under "Windows edition" see if "Service Pack 1" is displayed.
Under "System" list the Rating, Processor, RAM and System Type.
Scroll down to "Windows activation" and make sure is says "Windows is activated".

With that information I will be able to better diagnose the problem.
