I had malaware infections. So I formatted my harddrive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. The instal went fine. However, after rebooting, when it comes to naming the computer, it hangs.

Changed the hard drive. Still the same problem. How do I know if my motherboard is corrupted. Earlier, I had reported that IE was not working but Mozilla was.

The laptop is 3-4 years old Acer Travelmate 290.

Can you boot into safe mode?

Have you tried DBAN?

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

Blow away the Hard drive then reinstall XP.

I have formatted the HDD with recovery CD's and not XP Cd's, I may be saddled with XP licensing issues. I was thinking if I could format the HDD and then boot with WinXP pro CD and chose repair instead of New installation, it should not ask for license/keys. Is this do-able ?

Yeah that is another story. If you are installing the recovery disks on the native system the XP key should be on a sticker on the outside of your case.
