I have just had a pop up on my laptop (preinstalled with Vista) saying that the product key is not valid for activation!
Why has this happened?

I have recently installed SP1

Use the automated phone system to activate your Vista.

Note: If there is no major issue with your computer why do you want to update and test with all the updates that MS releases. Wait for few days and then update if you think, it is going to do any good.
@whs
This issue happens with some scrap windows update. Few months before when there was an issue with MS servers the same issue happened. Worst case is that Vista will say the OS in your computer is not genuine. All that you have to do is call the automated phone system and follow the IVR. If this fails to work recover the computer.
To say that you don't need to instal SP1 is presumptuous. Yes, you don't need SP1 RIGHT AWAY.
Yes, it is best to wait a while, watch carefully for developments online -- look for anything that could affect your setup and for fixes or workarounds that are posted.
Then, after careful consideration, and (of course) after you have backed up your system, proceed with the upgrade. There are security upgrades and some worthwhile components in the package -- one,for example, the ability to encrypt drives other just C.
