I have just had a pop up on my laptop (preinstalled with Vista) saying that the product key is not valid for activation!

Why has this happened?

I have recently installed SP1

Use the automated phone system to activate your Vista.

Check this...

Note: If there is no major issue with your computer why do you want to update and test with all the updates that MS releases. Wait for few days and then update if you think, it is going to do any good.

@coates, this is a thread that most likely other people will read because this situation may occur more often. Then it would be useful to know what " All sorted" means. Can you please put some more meat on the bone.

I phoned automated phone system to activate my copy of Vista.

The whole process was pretty much pain free and simple to follow.

@whs

This issue happens with some scrap windows update. Few months before when there was an issue with MS servers the same issue happened. Worst case is that Vista will say the OS in your computer is not genuine. All that you have to do is call the automated phone system and follow the IVR. If this fails to work recover the computer.

@Santo, since this seems to happen from time to time, I wanted to make sure people can find the right info here. Thanks again for elaborating on it.

Cheers Lighthouse.

I have reactivated over the phone, do i still need to install this or would this have solved the problem without having to phone?

There is no need to download that update.

To say that you don't need to instal SP1 is presumptuous. Yes, you don't need SP1 RIGHT AWAY.

Yes, it is best to wait a while, watch carefully for developments online -- look for anything that could affect your setup and for fixes or workarounds that are posted.

Then, after careful consideration, and (of course) after you have backed up your system, proceed with the upgrade. There are security upgrades and some worthwhile components in the package -- one,for example, the ability to encrypt drives other just C.

@SilverTip, I Think you misunderstood. I think Santo was talking about the fix (link) Lighthouse had posted 3 postings above.
