Win XP: Black screen on boot update with latest Microsoft updates

I have an Asus NetBook running Win XP. After updating with latest MS updates, Windows in normal mode
does not boot to logon screen, but just displays a black screen (no cursor). Displayed Windows logo during
boot process.

After this the HDD light shows a lot of activity but will not boot even after several hours, when disk activity seems
to not occur. Boots every time in safe mode (with/without network support).

Unable to do system restore even though system has restore points.

Any suggestions?

Try to start your XP in clean boot mode to find the faulty or conflicting driver.
Here are the guided steps you need to follow:

Update or reinstall the faulty driver after finding one.
