I just bought my niece and nephew and Ipod Touch (4th generation). A friend of mine said there was a device that you could carry with you at all times and be able to access wifi all the time. What is this device? How secure is it? Can it work also for smartphones? Thanks!

It's called MiFi or Hotspot (or any other name for a mobile broadband) and sold by just about every major vendor worldwide. Coverage varies depending on carrier and subject to similar limitations as a smartphone.

Wireless is inherently less secure than wired. You should always use
best practices, if let's say, you're using the free wifi at Barnes & Noble.
