I have a Compaq Presario SR1717CL, I change the original HD to a WD Raptor (10,000 rpm), upgraded cpu to Amd athlon x 2 4800, and upgraded to a Ati HD4350 1gb.
AND I JUST noticed it has a 250w psu.............
Are psu's brand specific? Do I have to have a certain type? 550w?
It looks fairly easy enough to change.

Thanks

A 250W PSU is not a very powerful. But it might do the job. You have to add up the wattage requirements of your various units and see whether it fits. In principle you can upgrade to any higher wattage PSU. I like the Antec models. On this page you will find a little selection. And yes, the change is pretty easy (if you don't mind to wrestle with all the wires). Just make sure all the wires (especially the unused ones) are well tied and out of the way of blowers.

So I don't have to worry about a specific voltage when buying a psu? They are all the same. Just have to make sure it fits in the case.

The PSUs have different output voltages - and that will be obvious by the type of plug. If you mark the plugs of the old PSU before you unplug them, then it will be easy to find the equivalent plug of the new PSU. There will not be too many plug to switch around anyhow - about 5 or 6. This is how it looked last time I changed the PSU. There were a lot of plugs I did not need (for future additional components - if any).

A calculator for wattage required HERE

You have to worry about wattage!!

Wahtever you do-dont get an El Cheapo-get something like a Corsair-Vantec-Thermaltake,Antec etc.
