What is the optimal internet security suite?

I run 3 PC's - each with a different security suite (McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky). In several PC-press articles I read that Kaspersky seems to do the best job. But I really have no personal insight whether that is true or false. I only noticed that Kaspersky seems to give me the least trouble (i.e. Spybot finds very little in that system) - and I got it or free. Does anybody have an educated opinion on what is the optimal internet security package?

My .02c...

Favorite security suites are like favorite beer, very subjective. Like the chip wars between AMD and Intel, when one makes advances, the others eventually catch-up and surpass. In other words, it's cyclical and today's 'best' may be next quarters laggard.

You have 3 computers and the best scenario could quite possibly be to rotate them. Consider memory and CPU usage when evaluating too.

Scott, Thank you for the links. The WordPress analysis confirmed my experience with Norton and McAfee(heavy handed trucks). Since I do have AdAware and run the Vista firewall, Kaspersky may not be such a bad choice. Bit Defender looks interesting too - that one is new to me. I will look into it. Since it is only $55 for 3 PC's it may well suit my setup. WHS

FYI, for the first time I've installed a Microsoft security suite, Windows OneCare. The main advantage is that it integrates into Vista flawlessly. The downside, as I've read, is that the virus scan picks up less than others (but is apparently improving).

It's a free 90 day trial and reasonably priced thereafter.

Scott, with this link you can get KASPERSKY free for 1 year - small problem though, it's all in German. The site may be interesting though. If you click their DOWNLOAD button, you find a lot of free known programs - and most are in English. Advantage of the site: all downloads have been checked and are ' clean '. The Mag is part of the largest German publisher.
PS: How do you always manage to get the URL's posted as links - mine always come out as text and I am also unable to copy/paste any snips into the ' Reply ' window.

I just see that my 'text' link becomes a URL once posted

Thats OK. personally, I don't like suites. I think you can get much better protection by using the best antivirus from one firm with the best antispyware from another and firewall
from somewhere else. Thats just "on guard" though. I still run another half dozen or so "anti nasty" programs once or twice or twice a week (deep scan)

I run Spybot, AdAware and CCleaner (for the registry)from time to time. Any other good ones you can recommend?
My preference for "suites" is only because I am lazy and don't like to keep track of too much stuff. Also, if there is a real problem, one can call their help line - if it is in India though, that is a challenge.

I use a combination of Avast antivirus, Comodo firewall and Windows defender. They're all free and I haven't had any problems.

On Guard - Avira Antivir Personal, Spyware Terminator (or Spyware Doctor), Spybot search and destroy and windows firewall.
For regular full scans, just try out as many as you can. Some work together on some systems and not on others. If there's a conflict, you can always schedule them to run at different times

Hi taybay. The last version of Avast I had wouldn't work properly (previously OK). Also Comodo caused problems

Thanks guys, looks like I have a full plate now. I'll try some of them. If I get into trouble I'll get back to you and blame you

IRT Lighthouse: I believe you, but unfortunately finding the right software is hit or miss. It's probably impossible to find an antivirus or firewall that doesn't conflict with something running on the system. Sorry you had problems =P but I'm running them fine.

Dead right, try everything till you get what works (and plenty of ERUNT while you're getting there)!

Thanks mysticgeek. I had seen this one before. Trouble with those "collections" is that you have to keep track of a lot of stuff (e.g. for updates). That's why I prefer the suites (especially Kaspersky). they keep you out of trouble "automatically" - or sort of.
