I came across this format while I was looking through some movies I stored on my PC. I opened it up with VLC and had it repair the file, but the video has terrible quality. In addition, does any program support this file?

Did you try running it with Windows Media Player?

... Are you serious? Windows Media Player sucks when compared to VLC player.
Let me rephrase my question. Does any converter support this file? it seems like a pretty rare format to use.

Gmanlink, I've never heard of this. Use MediaInfo to determine the container type and the format of video, audio, and text streams. Then we will know what to use to play it.

Gmanlink, that's good info. Here's what we know. The container is just a plain AVI, nothing fancy. You can rename the file extension to .avi and it should be no trouble. The video stream is MPEG-4 visual profile encoded by XviD. The video is 640x272 pixels which should be fine in a window, but will become blocky at full-screen. The audio stream is AC-3 (aka Dolby Digital) with only 2 audio channels which is actually somewhat odd. Personally, I would have used MP3 for a 2 channel audio stream for higher compatibility.

I think you will have good luck playing this file just by changing the extension to .avi. Try that and see if WMP will play it. If you don't have a filter to decode MPEG-4 SP and ASP streams, get XviD from the following link:

Thanks Scott. But on another note, are there any other players that are compatible with .mkv? I played a vid with that format on VLC, and it froze about 30 into it.

Gmanlink, install the Haali Media Splitter and any DirectShow-aware player on your system will be able to open Matroska (.mkv) files.
http://www.free-codecs.com/dow.....litter.htm

The splitter will break out the video, audio, and text streams so that any player that can decode those streams will be able to play them without needing to know how to open a .mkv file. With this installed, you can play .mkv in WMP, MPC, VLC and most others. It might do a better job of opening the .mkv file so that VLC won't crash. Or, VLC might be having problems with the streams inside the file -- use MediaInfo to check the streams for anything odd.
