(Solved) - webcam on messenger wont work

Well, seeing as it's beta it may have some compatibility issues. I had a look at the beta after it was released at the end of last year, and after a brief check around I tried to uninstall it because I didn't get on well with it. I found the same problem as you, so ended up doing a system restore to before I had installed the beta. Being a beta I guess you can expect there to be some bugs, because, as you are probably aware, a beta is for testing, generally released to the public where people try it out and see if they DO find any problems. I suggest that you report the problem to WLM, and then roll back to the previous version if it is causing you trouble and usage of webcam is important to you. Alternatively, I imagine they will release a patch/update at some point in the relatively near future, so you could wait around for that. It's up to you!
This might sound silly, but off and on I have the same issue with the new Windows Live Messenger:
-Close messenger to the task bar
-right click, select sign out
-right click, select exit
-goto start, all programs, windows live and click on windows live messenger (basically restarting messenger)
-select the menu icon, tools, audio video setup
If you do not get an error message, then your webcam will work. I have messenger installed on multiple machines, I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling multiple times to get it to work with avail. I have even had this problem with fresh installs after using messenger only once, so it is a bug in messenger for sure.
Hopefully this helps :)
What versions are we talking about? There is a confusing list of Windows Live Messenger (WLM) releases. I believe that v8.5 was the last full, stable release. Maybe. There was a version 9 beta, then they changed it to version 14, but it's not called 14 it's part of "Essentials" or maybe "Wave 3". Or both. And the latest version is a Release Candidate (RC). Maybe. I'm confused!
Here is my plan. I'll boot up my Windows 7 Beta and use Internet Explorer 8 Beta to download the Windows Live Messenger Wave 3 Release Candidate and give it a try. Somehow, running tomorrow's software today is not inspiring me with confidence. :-(
So, I went ahead and installed WLM today to my Win7 install. The version I have is Version 2009 (build 14.0.8050.1202). According to my sources, that was the Wave 3 Release Candidate and now is the final version.
Maybe the problem you are having is with build 14.0.8050.1212. Since it's newer than the "final" version of Wave 3, it might be the next beta and it might be buggy.
I was tired of having to restart my messenger to get my Video to work (See steps above) for me. I did a lot of searching and finally came up with a solution that worked:
My issues have been cause by McAfee Site Advisor being installed. If you have MSA installed, follow these steps I found:
1. Navigate to the following folder:
Windows XP/2000/Vista (32-bit): C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor (Make sure you change the permissions to modify the file listed below)
Windows Vista (64-bit): C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\SiteAdvisor (Make sure you change the permissions to modify the file listed below)
2. Right-click on the file sasets.ini and choose Open With, then select Notepad.
3. Locate the section titled [msnmsgr.exe].
4. Change Enabled=1 to Enabled=0.
5. Click File and select Save.
6. Close sasets.ini and restart your computer for changes to take effect.
