I was thinking about learning how to become a web developer but was wondering if anyone could advise me on the best way to go about this and what are the key things I should be studying. I do not have a lot of money so expensive courses are not viable and I do not have enough time to devote to full time education. Preferably I am looking to study in my spare time for around 5-20 hours per week. I live in the UK if that is important. Thanks for any assistance you can offer me.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Firstly, I would like to thank you all for responding to my query. I am particularly pleased with the notepad ++ as I have found that very useful. I did take a look at w3 and alison but decided to go with a text book for learning the basics but may visit them again once I complete this book.
I am currently learning HTML 5 and CSS 3 from this textbook and will post back once I am done.
