A friend of mine has an Acer Aspire 5515 laptop with Windows Vista Basic.

It will not boot. It will get to the black screen with microsoft corp at the bottom.
Just above that you have the status bar that shows that it is loading but it never does.

He claims this started the day after he ran his windows updates.

It will not boot in safe mode or if you choose Launch startup repair from the advanced startup menue.

I used Ubuntu to attempt to recover his documents so we could reload windows.
I was able to get into his hard drive with no problem except that none of his documents are there.
The folders are there but no documents.
He was really concerned about his iTunes folder. The program folder is there but the Itunes folder is missing from
his MyMusic folder. I searched the entire hard drive and can not find his music files.
As a matter of fact his whole My Documents folder is empty.

I have never used Vista so I am at a loss of what happened here.
Stuff happens but I don't understand why his documents would be gone, I guess it could have been a virus.

Anybody have any ideals other than just doing a reload or why his documents disappeared?

struitte hi. Shutdown the laptop, unplug everything, take out battery, leave for 30 minutes, put battery back in, start laptop.

That didn't work either. Since everything was gone anyway, we just did a reinstall.
