Ok, I have a laptop and a Toshiba 300GB EHD - its my 2nd EHD so I have all files from Jan 2009 and back - but all my recent files are on this EHD. I havent' been able to access the drive from my computer - it says that it needs to be formatted - and I know I shouldnt do that or I will lose all my data. (personal photos, scrapbooking pages, etc). I tried it on my mom's computer (XP) and I could open the EHD and it showed all my files and folders but I couldnt open the file (Like an Adobe Photoshop file or a photo). We tried copying them to her computer and kept getting a Cyclic Redundancy Check error (or something along those lines)

So...Any suggestions on how I can get those file off that EHD - I know I know, backup backup backup (but I was really good at backing things up till my CD/DVD seemed to stop working - any tips for that as well - LOL). But it would be REALLY GREAT if I could get into there and at least make copies of things...if the drive isnt usuable anymore I can live with having to buy another one - its the last 3 months of photos of my kids and my scrapbooking supplies that I would have a hard time living without!!

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

hi trina512,

have you tried using "xcopy /c" to copy the files? the "/c" switch would copy the files and ignore the errors. of course doing that you'll have a "no worse than" backup copy of your files.

Hmmm - no I guess I havent done that - since I really dont know how :( Sorry I'm pretty clueless about that kind of thing (I can do just about anything in photoshop tho - LOL!) Can I get a detailed decription on how to do that? It would be just copying the files and folders off the EHD to my computer (or another EHD) right?

Oh, and could I do this on my computer if it is saying it needs to be formatted - or should I do this on a different computer (I'm not at my mom's anymore and wont be there for another week or so...guess I could try my FIL's computer)...

Just wondering :D Thanks in advance
