I have created the vista disc and when I click on repair it asks for windows operating system driver (which is not showing in the box) and I cant find it anywhere to enable me to continue the repair! This has happened since getting the bootmgr thing. Can anyone help? Thanks

Tracey, what happened before the bootmgr is missing message? Did you have a working install of Vista for some time? Can you think of anything that happened around the time that it stopped booting such as a malware infection, a Windows Update, a system crash, or similar? What is the make and model of the system that won't boot?

Apparently, you have access to another system that you are posting from. You may need to make some other repair or diagnostic discs.

Hi Scott, my sister was playing a pre installed game and the whole system crashed! I know that it was running slow before this happened. I am on my pc and her one is a windows vista home basic OEMAct. When loading the win vista disc on boot it allows me to set the country,I click on repair and it starts to search for the operating system, then the box with system recovery options is blank - giving me the option to load drivers! And that is as far as I get! If I try start up repair and then the problem details show the following:
Problem Event Name - StartupRepairV2
Problem Signature 01 - ExternalMedia
Problem Signature 02 - 6.0.6000.16386.0.0.0.0
Problem Signature 03 - 0
Problem Signature 04 - 65537
Problem Signature 05 - unknown
Problem Signature 06 - MissingBootManager
Problem Signature 07 - 0
Problem Signature 08 - 2
Problem Signature 09 - WrpRepair
Problem Signature 10 - 21
OS Version - 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID - 1033

Does this help?

Thanks
Tracey

Tracey, I find the problem signature that says "ExternalMedia" to be odd. It's as if it is trying to boot or repair some external hard drive or storage system. Power down the system and remove as many peripherals as possible. Definitely remove any storage devices whether attached by USB or plugged into a card reader. Ideally, strip it down to keyboard, mouse and monitor. See if that changes the way it boots, the error(s) it presents, or the effect of the repair CD.

For the make and model, I am looking to know if it's a Dell or an HP or an Acer or what. That is the "make" or manufacturer. The model number varies widely by manufacturer, but is usually a string of letters and numbers. With this information, we can look for support on the Internet such as how to enter the BIOS and how to do a factory restore, if it becomes necessary.

Hi Scott, Now im blonde and lost! How do I remove the peripherals and what are they? There are no devices attached just the power lead - this is a laptop and the make and model is a dreaded High Grade and underneath it shows the model no as VA250D.
Thanks again
Tracey
PS I can enter the Bios (I think) by pressing F2 which shows some settings - Does this help?

I've never heard of Higrade, but I'm starting to dread it already. Their website is pretty sad, so I don't expect to get much help from there.

If there are no external devices connected, that's good although it doesn't explain the odd error message. In the BIOS, you want to find the hard drive to make sure that it is detected and also to get the model name. Hard drive models are long strings of letters and numbers that are usually not very descriptive. Knowing the model will allow us to run the manufacturer's diagnostics on the drive. Also, make sure that the hard drive is in the startup or boot sequence after the CD/DVD drive. Unfortunately, it's hard to be more specific since BIOS screens vary wildly.

From the Vista Repair CD, can you get to the Command Prompt? If so, there are commands that can be run there that will help diagnose the problem.

How old is the motherboard ? This problem sometimes when you might be using a sata harddrive but on the repair disk it does not load the sata drivers so you will need to go to the website for your motherboard ,load sata drivers for your brand, model onto a usb sick and when it asks to load drivers from the recovery console point it to the usb stick and load the drivers. Then the OS should see the hard drive .Repair from there.

Yes, I can get to the command prompt and I have tried rstrui.exe /OFFLINE:C\windows
A message appears and will not me allow to proceed, and I have tried sytem restore form the disk but I am unable to do this either!
The Boot tab menu inthe bios gives the following information:
Boot Priority order:
1: USB key
2: IDE 4: Fujitsu MHW2060BH-(S1)
3: IDE 2: TSSTcorpCDW/DVD SN-M242D-(
4: PCI BEV: VIA BoorAgent
5: USB FDC:
6:
No 6 is blank

In the advanced tab there is the following:
Boot-time Diagnostic screen - Enabled
Frame Buffer Size - 64mb
Display Device Selection - lcd+crt
Local Bus IDE adapter - Both
Legacy USB Support - Enabled
Lan Boot Control - Enabled
No Executive Mode Men Protection - Disabled

Main Menu Tab shows the following:
IDE Channel 1 Master - [FUJITSU MHW2060BH-(S1)]
IDE Channel 2 Master - [TSSTcorpCDW/DVD SN-M242D-]
System Memory - 640 KB
Extended Memory - 457728 KB
CPU Type - Intel (R) Celeron(R) M CPU
CPU Speed - 1860 MHz
Bios Version - 1.OB-V 08-8A20

On the exit menu tab there is an option to load setup defaults and Im wondering if this would help if I tried this?

Thanks

Tracey

tracey71, in the boot priority order move IDE4: Fujitsu MHW2060BH-(S1) up from #2 to #1. or if you're trying to boot from a cd move IDE2:TTScorpCDW/DVD SN-M242D up to #1 from #3. save the setting and exit. try booting from either one again

Hi Tracey funny how when you try to be the I.T geek or when people somehow think that you can fix their problems or turns into a nightmare for you....lol I have had this happen for me too.The sata drivers should be on their website thats if its a sata hard drive thats in the laptop...Im not from your end of the earth so have never heard of this brand Im from little old NZ,,,,,another thing is why you might not beable to see the OS is it could just be a faulty cable from the motherboard to the hard drive....I will also look to see if I can find any drivers for you as well
Regards Stew.

Hi looking at what Scott posted I think its a faulty cable from the motherboard to the hard drive thats why it thinks there is something else attached I think....have a funny feeling that it posts this message when this happens it cant tell you or decide for itself what is attached or where but whatever it is it says its faulty and this I think includes the cable to the hard drive so if you are any good see if you can get to the drive and remove the cable give the conections a clean with contact cleaner....it could be more than this but hey why not give it ago.

Ok lets just start from the begining wen the systems starts hit either the delete key or the fullstop key so you boot into the bios and tell me do you see the hardrive anywhere it sould be on the first screen I think it is ......anybody pitch in and tell me if this is not correct....if you can see it of do find it great....this means at least its still working.

Er..... help lol, when it starts I can hit the f2 key and it lets me go into the bios... Then, I see all the above as described to ScottW and havent a clue if any of that is the hard drive - can you tell me where I would find the hard drive in the bios or is it one of the above in the tabs as described earlier to Scott?
I am sitting here at the moment with some of the back off looking for an loose wires and cant see any!
Thanks
Tracey
