Hello. This is the first time I visit this forum. I'm from Belgium and my language is Dutch, so my English won't be perfect. I was surprised to see such a number of topics about Vista on this site. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite A300-129, which came standard with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I completed all the updates including SP1. I have problems with the administrator rights. When I right click on a program and choose "run as administrator" I still haven't the same rights as when I log in with the "hidden" administrator account. I already tried to disable the UAC as described on this site, but that doesn't make any difference. Should I have the same rights in both cases? E.g. Open Office can be installed from my normal account, but only runs when I'm logged in as the "hidden" administrator. It's not possible to install drivers for my Canon MP600 multifunctional if I'm not logged in as the "hidden" administrator. I can install the programs for the MP600 from my normal account, but they run only correctly if i am (again) logged in as the "hidden" administrator. Drivers and programs are downloaded from the Canon site for use with Vista 32. Why can't I do everything from my normal account? I hope someone can help me out. Greetings, acdc.

Why did you create a hidden administrator account?

Because I read about the fact that you can get some things done only when using this account. I can't imagine this is the right way, but in the practice I experience that some things just don't work if I use the standard account, even when right clicking on "run as an administrator". That's why I wonder if the "hidden" administrator is really necessary and what's the difference with right clicking on "run as an administrator". Obviously it's not the same.

Let me quote the Geek "Note: You really shouldn't use this account for anything other than troubleshooting. In fact, you probably shouldn't use it at all" It is from this thread: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....ows-vista/
Lesson to be learned. try to set everything back to "normal" and then let's see whether we can help you with particular problems like not being able to run programs as admin.

@whs: OK, i've learned the lesson. I managed to install the Canon MP600 drivers from my normal account, but now my MP600 broke down (Murphy law?). The display says error 5010. I've checked the internet: lots of people have the same problem. And guess what: the warranty (1 year) ended 2 weeks ago.

With Open office 2.4 I still have the same problem: the programs open only from the "hidden" administrator. From my "normal" account, right clicking the "run as administrator" I only get an errorsound and a tiny windows that cannot be made bigger with only the letters "OK". If you click on OK it just closes that window, and doesn't run the programs. It's probably an errormessage, but you can't read it. Any idea?

Maybe you can try this. Find the Open Office program in All Programs. Right click on it and click on Properties. Then you should see the upper window in my picture (I have used Command Prompt as example since I do not have Open Office). Then follow the numbers followed by Apply > OK. See whether that works.

This might be helpful for other shortcuts. Unfortunatly it doesn't make any difference for Open office. I also tried to make sure that no other program was running, but that made no difference too. For one reason or another the "hidden" administrator does not encounter this problem.

That is too bad. Now I am really puzzled and out of words. Maybe some Open Office expert can help.

Well. Open Office can be run as Administrator, from a normal Administrator account. It seems you have a deeper problem!

I created a new user with administrator rights and there it works just like it should. Seems there is a problem related to my useraccount. Any idea what could influence this behaviour?

When I compare both users with explorer I see Users-test(the name of the new account)-Application data-Roaming-OpenOffice.org2-and then a lot of sub-accounts.
My user account hasn't the OpenOffice.org2 map, allthough the software was installed from this user.
What does the map "Roaming" stand for? I think my user account is %$&^*%&: can I just delete it and go on with the new one? Most programs were installed from my user account, but they will also run on other useraccounts i assume, or do they need the presence of the account that installed the programs?

Edit by mod ( No bad language please)

Sorry, my english is not perfect, so it's possible that I sometimes use terms I've heard or read frequently, but maybe aren't generally accepted. I'll try to be more careful.

Aaaagh Antwerp. Stayed there for a few days once. Brilliant. We do have several Dutch speakers on this forum. So please do not feel alone :)

Maybe it's not a bad idea to show the language of the members (if they want to do so). Otherwise you don't know if you are speaking with your neighbour or with someone at the other side of the world. :-)

They would have to put it in their profile. You can (maybe) get an idea by clicking on "member" (on the left)
