Vista Folder Thumbnails
(33 posts)Sarah James, where are you???
While on the subject of folders, Vista does appear to have a glitch in its "Customize" folder program. For example, I am no longer able to place photos on folders in the usual manner (i.e. right click on folder > properties > customize > choose file, etc) If I have a music folder of a favorite artist and I want to put his/her photo on the folder the only way I can do it is to place the photo in the folder along with the music files. This works but the other problem is that sometimes the folder photo disappears when I update the folder. It is highly annoying and if anyone has an answer it would be appreciated.
Hi, whs. I don't want to be a nag but I have had no responses to the above. If Sarah James is not available to comment I was hoping others may have jumped in because it does seem that customizing Vista folders is a common problem. I tried it on a friends computer and was unable to customize his folders in the usual way. This was why I was wondering if by going back to XP Folders it might solve the problem.
On top of everything else, when I change a folder icon by selecting from the Vista list of icons it only stays put providing I don't change anything in the folder. In other words I can't find a way to lock the icon to the folder. Any suggestions, anyone?????
Sorry I cannot help you. I do not make changes like that because I consider them non-vital for my system. Sarah has moved house and is waiting for her new DSL. But she should be back any day. There was a thread a few weeks ago where she explained how she changed her folders. Maybe you can find it. I don't quite remember the details because I was not very interested in the subject.
This thread shows some of Sarah's work:

I don't mess around with these folder images. I am more pragmatic and less aesthetic. Oh no! whs and I have something in common! (;-P)
My thanks also, ScottW, for pointing me towards the appropriate thread. My brain is still spinning!! I must say I admire geeks who can write lines of programing but it is all Double Dutch to me. Sarah's glass folders also look very nice but, at this stage, it is not what I am looking for.
For the moment let's ignore my initial question (i.e. reverting to XP type folders) I am not even that concerned about not being able to "Customize" my sub-folders in the usual manner, as described above, as I can get around it. What I would really like to know is how can I "fix" a folder once I have customized it. For example in "Music" I have a number of folders which I have customized with icons selected from the Vista library. As soon as I do anything inside one of those folders, such as add music files to my "All Audio" folder, the icon on the folder disappears and the folder reverts back to a plain buff folder. There has to be a setting somewhere that will allow me to "fix" a folder Icon once I have selected it.
I don't know if ScottW is being sarcastic, but heres some of my own -> ScottW, I totally agree. User Interface issues are such un-pragmatic aesthetic problems, I dont even use window views on my computer at all. I just shell into a DOS screen and manage my files there, why bother with graphics and clicking with the mouse, and all that froofy user interface stuff.
I'd like to know if theres an answer to this, because here's my deal: I have more than one computer (shock! what would anyone ever do with more than one computer!) I have several people who access my home server (where all my files are located). I have different users, XP, Vista, Mac, and linux. So, nevermind all the other users, my problem is with the Vista computers. I have several thousand folders (music, movies, pictures, etc etc) on the one computer everyone accesses. All of these folders have (right now) a folder.jpg file in them, which generates a thumbnail preview in XP automagically, I don't have to generate system-dependent metadata (If I were to format any computer or add a new one to the network, and they were to view the folders, the thumbnails would appear because the thumbnail data in on the server, not the local computer).
The Vista computers show that 3-d thing, (a smaller image space, the image is perpective mapped) which makes it harder to understand what's in the folder, where in XP the flat folder image is larger, flatter, and easy to see. I'd love to get Vista to do this, so my users can actually get some idea what is in the folder. If nobody here knows, that's alright, but please don't patronize me by saying this UI issue is unrelated to productivity, pragmatics, or other important p-words.
I WANT TO have my FOLDER THUMBNAILS flat JUST like as in XP. NOW in VISTA i DONT have the folder thumbnails look flat but they look in an expandable way. Plz help how to make them look FLAT.
is there a program? or do i have to do something else? i am searching for this 2 months!
Hi Radomer!
Welcome to HTG:)
I've never worked with XP, so I don't really understand what you mean.
If you can post a screenshot of the way you want it, I'll give it my best shot to sort it out:)
If you dont have access to an XP machine anymore - maybe someone else can take a screenshot on his machine?
Cheers,
Sarah.
@ Spacegold - sorry. I had a problem with skydrive and took everything off it. Forgot there was a link here:)
I don't know exactly what folders I put up before and I can't get to my cd's at the moment, so for now I just put up a copy of my foldercollection.
I'll put up more when I've found the files again:)
Cheers,
Sarah.
Here are some samples, so you know if you want the file:)
It's just folders with something that refers to what's inside the folder.
General remark: I have only used images under creative commons as far as I know. If not, let me know and I'll remove the link or put up a copyright notice if required:)

Cheers,
Sarah.
