Ok guys. i want to take some of the storage from my (C:)drive (vista partition)and add it to (D:)drive(XP) partition. (10GB ended up not being enough for me). I can get the unallocated storage from the (C:)drive but don't know how to add it to the (D:)prtition which is to the right hand side.

Disk management page
"Disk0" runs from left to right /RECOVERY(E:)is 10.00GB /Vista(C:)is 129.19GB /XP(D:)is 9.76GB

Please any help or links to walk throughs would be great.

Unfortunately, you can't extend a partition to the left of itself using the built-in tool, because the tool doesn't support moving the start of the partition.

You'll have to use either a commercial tool like [edit: don't use partitionmagic], or you can use the gparted live cd, but it might make XP have booting problems (so you'd have to run repair)

Or, of course, you could copy all the files to somewhere on your vista drive, delete the partition and make a new one, and then copy the files back. That might work without having to run repair.

Warning, DO NOT use Partition Magic on a system with Vista installed. It is not compatible and there are many reports around the net about Partition Magic messing up Vista partitions. Development has ceased and there have been no new versions since 2004:

@ScottW

Thanks for that... I'll make sure to not recommend that in the future. Familiar with any commercial products that work better? I know Acronis has one...

I would recommend using the gparted livecd to move and resize the partition.
Just copying the files like The Geek suggested is likely to not work right. There are many things Windows XP/Vista store on their OS partition that a normal file copy would probably not get.

The Geek, I am not familiar with any other commercial products. While researching for this thread, I did see that Acronis Disk Director (ADD) 10 is Vista compatible, but not the original 10.0 only a later build v10.0.2154

However, reading briefly through the reviews, they are mixed on ADD. I also see that Paragon Partition Manager is Vista compatible, but I have no idea if any of these commercial packages are any good.

One more I had forgotten about: Avanquest Partition Commander Pro which is Vista ready at version 10.1:

Again there are few reviews and those are mixed. Until I know more about these commercial partition products, I'm not about to recommend any of them.

I have found the solution, and all along it lie with the Disk Management utility in Vista. In order to Extend the main Volume of the Drive (usually the C: drive), you must first DELETE any other Volume (usually the D: drive), save the Boot Sector, and then Extend the main Volume to the Full Disk Capacity.

IF you still wanted to keep the D: drive, but with not as much space as it was using, you may now Shrink the Main Volume with whatever space you want the D: drive to use.

*bow* I will be here all week.

Just copying the files probably won't work, but maybe this is an option:
Make an image of the partition with DriveImage XML.
Delete the partition and use DriveImage to restore the image to the enlarged partition.

Cheers,
Sarah.
