Using VPN on Public WiFi

I travel anywhere from two to four months each year. During that time, I rely on my Android tablet. As there will be times when I need to access my bank account and such, I'm exploring ways of doing so safely when away from home.

Might using a VPN to connect to a https site offer sufficient security? Any other ideas?
