I read this tutorial:

... but I have a question. Can I backup my files onto DVDs? I do not have an external hard drive. So while this Ubuntu Live CD is in one drive can I use my other drive to burn the files from my pc? If so, is it complicated or confusing? Do you know of a tutorial?

Thanks for any and all help :)

Yes, you will be able to burn files if you are able to access files from the Windows partition.

Another option which may be faster/easier if you have another computer on your local network, is to create a shared folder on it then store your backup there.

The only other computer in the house is my boyfriend's rather old laptop and it just doesn't have enough space to backup my files. I do have an old hard drive somewhere which still has xp on it and old files and stuff... is there a way for me to use that to backup the files or no? Sorry, I'm clueless. Other than buying a large external hard drive (can't afford that right now), I think my only option is to burn a bunch of dvds...

First of all, thank you for this, it's saving my friend a few hundred dollars and a whole lot of headache. But I'm stuck. I'm doing the network share option, and I can't get past "connect to server". What exactly do I put in the "server", "share" and "user name" fields? And what password do I use in the screen after that? The one for the comp I am connecting to or the one I am connecting from?
