Misdaroc, if your Inspiron is like my inspiron there is only one audio output. That is the headphone jack. You will probably need an adapter or a cable that connects the headphone output jack to the TV's audio input. Make sure that is the same input jack where the video is going. The connector for the laptop's output jack is almost certainly a 1/8" stereo miniplug. The connectors for the TV's audio input will probably be left and right phono plugs, one red and one white.

i met a guy last night who use to work for HP and he said i won't get sound on my tv.maybe your idea might work. i do have a set of speakers for my laptop.which i might add for $30 sounds pretty good,so i can use them.i'm happy i got the tv to work as a monitor.not getting a reply right away made me try to figure out the problem myself and this time it worked. this site still helped me in a way.lol maybe someone might read this and help them also.i'll consider this one solved.thanx ScottW for your reply and i 'm still gonna check out your idea.

I don't follow. A guy who used to work for HP says that you can't get sound from your TV? HP doesn't make TVs. Did this guy actually look at your TV set?

Me, I have never seen a TV that had video inputs, such as an S-video connector, that didn't also have audio inputs. One potential problem would be if your TV did not have built-in speakers, but if you can watch TV and get sound you should be able to hook up the laptop with sound. The diagram below shows the kind of connectors you might find on a TV set. The Video In 1, 3, and 4 all have an S-video connector, a composite video connector (yellow) and a left and right audio connector (white and red, respectively). Using the cable I described above, you connect the audio out from the laptop to the same audio in where the S-video is connected and you should get sound.

i guess the guy meant i won't get sound with the pc monitor cable which is what i'm using.i think your right.you can buy the cable that fits in the headphone jack that has the connections for your stereo.so you can play your music on your pc through your stereo system.that should also work for your tv.

Oh, I see. You are using a VGA connector on the back of the TV. For some reason I was stuck on S-video. I picked out an Insignia TV at random from their website, the NS-LCD19-09, which has a VGA connector. Right next to that connector is an AUDIO jack that takes a 1/8" stereo mini-plug in for audio. This is the same connector as on the back of the computer and would typically be used for connecting PC speakers as well. If your set is the same, you could use a cable with the stereo mini-plug on each end to get audio from the TV along with the computer display.

Misdaroc, you're welcome. I'm glad it's working for you. The person who said you couldn't get sound deserves a good ribbing if you see him again. He said it wasn't possible, so tell him you have done the impossible! :-)
