Updating driver on SD Cardreader

My mom's camera makes it difficult to transfer the files on it to the pc. The card it uses (doesn't matter if I change the card to another - so it has to do with the camera, not with the quality of the card)can only be read in my external extra card reader, not in the inbuild one on my pc nor on the one in my mom's laptop.

So it was suggested to me to update the drivers.
But how do I go about that?
I don't even know what that reader is called on my pc;)
And I don't have that card at hand because the camera is with my mom at the moment.

Still, I'd like to get this sorted before she comes over again and because we have crossloop now I hope to get this sorted on her laptop too, so she can handle her photo's herself too and not always has to wait for me to fix it:)

Thanks,
Sarah.

It might be easier to answer this if you had stated the camera make and model, as well as the computers used?

I've had my share of Canon camera's and each one, I've had 5 different ones, requires a different install to be able to off-load pictures into the PC from the camera. Even my wife's HP camera requires an install so it can feed directly from the camera into the USB port. Only one Canon I had, the SD200 could feed from it to an app using the TWAIN driver. All the camera's came with a CD that contains the d/l app and a picture collection program. Did you mothers camera come with a CD? If so, you need to load it.

I have media card slots on both my computer and printer. The printer it appears has no drivers, it is part of the printer driver. My Dell does have individual drivers, and Dell provides them and updates on its site. Some people had had problems with the drivers, and it turns out the h/w supposedly is from Realtek. I have used those drivers and they do work. So, the best bet is to search the site of your computer manufacturer. If they don't have it, try to identify the media card reader's manufacturer, or look at drivers that get loaded with a program that displays drivers (there are quite a few but I've not had much luck with them identifying the driver but it might work for you). In my case, it is listed in the Device Driver under USB devices so it was easy.

Hi Mike,

Just to check I'm doing this right: it must be one of the ones in the pic below?

Hi Irv,

I don't use any software to transport pictures from my camera's to the pc. I take out the sd card, plug it in the pc and transfer the files myself. So in fact the model and make of the camera is not important (apart from the fact that I don't know many details about it <LOL>. It's a Traveller - that's about all I know.)
PC is from Medion.

Mike - I tried everything in there that could possibly anything related to an sdcard reader <LOL>, but they all came up with the message I have the latest drivers.

Then I am flabbergasted: I have a nikon cam and I format the card on the Camera! and then it works.
However, I have experienced 8g cards just not reading (SD) on 'older' of cards SD/XD; new cards not read. It really is a pain and the drivers Have been updated but I have to swap from one pc to another; does the card mention HC? herein may lie the problem.
I just read @ispalten post and this is most interesting: a driver (twain) loaded does not or should not conflict, it is a driver whether supplied by the Manufacturer or an update. I think that the card is not being read because it is HC.

It doesn't matter whether I format the card on the camera or by means of the pc. And it is a smaller card. 1GB.
Used to be a 526 MB card and on that one the results were the same.

I can use the card without formatting in my Nikon and then plug it in in the pc and there is no problem at all. The photo's from both the Traveller and the Nikon are easily accessible.

There are one other possibility - there is no power at the card reader. The fact that the external card reader works (which gets it's power from the USB) makes me believe that. The loss of power for card readers usually happens if you use "safely remove" on them. That cuts the power. "Eject" is the appropriate action. But usually the power comes back when you reboot.

HC is High Capacity. Camera's generally are the ones that can't handle these. Most 'recent' camera's can however. I have both types of cards. 'Normal' cards I think top out at 2GB's, and the HC's go from 4GB and up. Look HERE for most of the details.

My wife's 3 year old HP has media slots and it reads both formats without a problem. I have a CHEAP USB reader and it does as well. The referenced link does explain the compatibility issues as well, and this would be a driver, not card issue.

Sarah, all I was alluding to is that most camera's come with a connector and a USB cable to attach to a PC. They have special s/w shipped with the camera on CD (or available by D/L from the vendor's site) that when you connect the USB cable to the camera and PC and turn on the camera to playback, it pops up a window on the PC and you can transfer files with it.

Media card reader not reading the card, not sure why if another media reader can handle it?

Whs - I don't have this with cards from other camera's, can flip them in and out, no problem at all.
So I take it the power is working ok;)

Irv - Most people would work with the connector and the usb cable, so it's logical to assume my problem would have to do with that :)
The connector for that camera broke a long time ago and ever since I take out the SD card and have been doing the same for my new camera's.
I have another Traveller, a newer model (gave the old one to my mom ;D). The DC-XZ6 10.1 megapixel. I take the card from that one too to transfer the photo's and no trouble at all.

In fact I didn't even notice the problem till it became my mom's, because she could not transfer the files to her laptop. I myself had still my old Win98 SE machine when I used that camera, and because that machine didn't have an integrated card reader I used the external one.
But then I found out on my new Vista machine that my mom was right - I couldn't access the files either.
By chance I still had that external reader and gave it a try.
And wow it worked like a charm <LOL>.

But now either my mom has to take the cardreader home with her to handle her files or take the camera to me and let me do it.
I can of course get her another external card reader so she has her own, but the laptop has a reader, which is never used for anything and might as well be used for once <GRIN>.
So I thought I'll post the problem here and see if anyone knows how to fix it.

Frankly I'm out of ideas myself.
As you said - mostly the camera can't handle the card, where the pc can. But this time it is the other way round.
And the camera is an older one, but not terribly old. I bought it in 2007.

Well, in the laptop case it could be something as simple as the card reader is TURNED OFF in BIOS to save energy? Have you ruled that out?

On your PC, if it can't read ANY cards, then it is either bad h/w, improperly loaded/damaged drive, or the device is not getting loaded? I'm assuming the snapshot of Device Manager shows USB devices, correct? Does Event Viewer have any errors on loading?

On a whim, if you boot into SAFE MODE, will the PC reader work?

For what it is worth, this is what my Device Manager looks like :

LH - so far I haven't been able to locate that data!
Downloading that app right now. We'll see what I can find then:)

Irv - either my mom's laptop or my pc can read any other card ánd they can read the card that is in the camera as long as I first put it in the Nikon and take a picture with that camera.
So in my view it is a problem caused by the camera, but I don't understand what the problem is :(

HID compliant service: are those card readers? I don't know under what name I can find them!
But no matter what - any device I rightclick has the most recent drivers.
Everything is up to date and working properly.

I think I'll get my mom an external cardreader of her own. Only thing is I also have to get her an USB splitter then and there isn't much space where she has her laptop placed to add more external stuff. Otherwise I would have given her an external HDD a long time ago too <LOL>. (I just know it won't get used if it is a hassle to get it connected).
