My Windows 8 computer refuses to update. It does them each time I restart. then it backs them off with the message...

Failure Configuring Widows Updates
Reverting Changes
Don't turn Off the computer

How do I find out what is going wrong?

Edit: Just found Windows Update. It says that it has never checked for updates, although automatic is set and none are to be installed.

After checking for updates manually.

FWIW... if you click over to Microsoft, it offers a popup "Windows Update Troubleshooter" app for you to download and diagnose.

Thanks. Ran the fixit. It wiped the above 17. I'm Checking for updates again then I will try updating, thanks.

Now 16 are available.

One was not checked. I did not uncheck it. Trying update now.

Edit No luck.

Same reversal as above and Windows Updates reverts to...

Trying step 3 of the link above.

Of the items in ReadandShare's link only the first two applied. Three uses system restore which I have turned off since I have an SSD. and the fourth is for windows 7 and below.

Checking Ronniesorna's link now.

Did the following in Command prompt elevated.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]
(c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /scanhealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.2.9200.16384

Image Version: 6.2.9200.16384

[==========================100.0%==========================]
No component store corruption detected.
The operation completed successfully.

C:\Windows\system32>
C:\Windows\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.2.9200.16384

Image Version: 6.2.9200.16384

[==========================100.0%==========================]
The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was
repaired.
The operation completed successfully.

C:\Windows\system32>

The percentages held a long time 4min? at 20% then finished. If you run this be patient.

Trying updates again. One at a time.

Edit: One worked. Trying the rest still one at a time. Back later.

"Trying the rest still one at a time." sounds like a good idea.
i would look at the "published" date and try and load them in order of the dates they were published ??? just in case. also - i know youve got a good handle on this already but in csae it gets passed you, make sure to disable your anti-vi / anti-mal temporarily.

No, always install the Updates from top to bottom.

In other words, UN-Check the bottom ones upward to install the the top one first.

The order they are presented in is a function of dependencies and not necessarily the order of internal publication.

It's not working one at a time. Those not needing a restart work, but those needing a restart some do work some do not and get the revert notice.

Windows 8 will do that if not Activated properly.

I did have trouble activating it, spent 1/2 hour with Microsoft and finally got it to take the Product Key. So maybe it';s still messed up. What to do?

Edit: I would consider reinstalling if I did not fear the Product Key fiasco again.
