I think that may be the problem as it's the only thing I can think of. I have a Dell Inspirion 1520. Tried a new keyboard-same problem. When you type one letter you usually get 2, usually the one below the key you typed. Using a USB plugged in keyboard, it works fine. Thanks for any help

haenischr hi. Uninstall your keyboard driver in Device Manager. Reboot. Does that that work ?

Did it start happening after an MS Update, or installing a program ?

all I remember doing out of the ordinary was clicking (stupidly) on a BIOS button without having a clue what it was. No newly installed programs

Ah. Reboot the computer, and keep hitting F2. That maybe will get you into the BIOS Then enable USB's, and keyboard.

Try the Esc, or the Delete key, as you are booting up.

haenischr, an Inspiron 1520 is a laptop, right? Is there a problem with the built-in keyboard that is causing you to use and externally connected USB keyboard?

EDIT: sorry, I think that I misread your first post. It is the built-in keyboard that is giving double characters.

From Dell Support, it is the F2 key to enter BIOS on an Inspiron laptop. However, if you are getting a double character, the system might see a "3" and not enter BIOS.

haenischr,
---
Check to see if the keyboard outage is a coincidence by flashing the Bios back to the previous version.
