Man, I love this site and the How-To Geek. He got my slipstreamed XP CD up and running. :)

Anyway, I have a game called SimCopter, version 1.0. There is a patch for the game to update it to 1.2, but the patch is in a self-extracting WISE .exe file. The problem is that when I try to patch the game in Windows XP, the WISE file says that I'm using the wrong operating system (i.e. not Windows 95) and refuses to patch.

Is there a way to go into the .exe file and take the files out manually to patch my game? This problem has also come up with a self-extracting archive for King's Quest on a Classic Games CD, which also refuses to install because I'm using XP.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I would try running the EXE in compatability mode. Right click on it and select properties. On the Compatability tab, Check the box that says "Run this program in compatability mode for:" and select 95 from the drop down menu.

If that doesn't work, try this program for extracting the EXE.

Sorry for the long delay in my posting, SS. Thank you very much for the advice.

Unfortunately, none of the Unzip programs or Compatibility settings worked. I think I'll install Windows 95 on my machine and unzip the patch files for some games and stuff (I have more than one program/patch with this problem) then move them over to XP later on. :)

I would Install 95 on a virtual PC rather than as the main OS, it will save a lot of trouble.

Would you recommend a particular program for setting up a Virtual PC, like the Microsoft one, jon? Thanks!
