I have Vista Home Premium, my friend has a Mac with 10.4 OS. When he sends images embedded in an email they are not there, instead I get this, which is a link to the Hotmail website. Has anyone seen this problem before and have an solution? I assume it some setting in Vista as when I was using Windows 2000 there wasn't a problem. Thanks...Tom

Unable to recieve images from a Mac
(27 posts)I am not even sure you can paste pictures into hotmail like e.g.in AOL. I have tried that on my hotmail ID that I have not used in ages, but it did not work. I could only insert links. Tom, are you sure your friend does paste them into the mail or maybe he provides a link? -- On the occasion I found a ton of old mail that I had never seen, some more than half a year old - funny.
I use Windows Mail and a local dial up ISP, Eastern Shorenet at www.shorenet.net. The images that are not coming through are part of emails he is forwarding, he is not pasting the images into the emails himself. When the images are attachments there is no problem. Friends with XP have no problems, it's just me with Vista. What's strange is that the Hotmail (actually Windows Live) login links are where the images should be and if there are multiple images there are multiple Hotmail login links. With my XP friends not having a problem I think it's something in a Vista setting somewhere. I also think it's strange that the Hotmail login link appears, if anything should be compatible with Vista you would think it would be Hotmail. I have unchecked the box in Windows Mail security options that blocks downloaded images. Any and all suggestions appreciated.
Well, Actually I may be wrong. I just tested it myself (had to make a few setups first). I sent an embedded picture from my AOL ID to my Windows mail. The embedded picture did show up in the mail. What I will now do is forward it from AOL to Hotmail and then Windows mail and see what happens. I have all 3 ID's so I can do it. Will get back to you later with the result.
Well Tom, it atually worked. The embedded picture traveled from AOL > Hotmail > Windows mail without a problem. So I guess we are back to your "settings". I have to think about that. Since I do not use Windows Mail very often (plus I have IncrediMail sitting on top of Windows Mail), I have to investigate a little more. I would suspect something in your Windows Mail settings or in your Firewall.
Tom, I was trying to find a system in the neighborhood with McAfee on it, but unfortunately there is none. I myself have only Kaspersky and Norton 2008 so I cannot look into any details. I can only suggest you scout around McAfee a little and see whether something turns up. I am really sorry.
PS. When your McAfee license runs out, get a better Security suite. Here is a link on a recent comparison:

Try this in Windows Mail:
1. In the message list right click on the email and click properties.
2. Look at the size field.
If the size is around 20KB or less then it is quite likely that the message was sent wrong and the problem isn't on your end as it isn't possible for a normal size picture to be around 20KB in size. Though if you are just getting a small thumbnail size picture that would fit in at about 4KB.
Since you say it works for your friends email then I can only assume that the person is sending the correct email to them and one that is messed up to you.
To check if that is the case have the person send the email with pictures to both you and the other friends in the CC field. If you and the other friends get the same results my assumption is correct and if not then something very strange is going on.
Ok, that is odd.
Try this to see if the pictures did for sure come with the message:
Right click on the message and click properties.
Click the details tab.
Click the "Message Source.." button.
Scroll down and check for something like the following:
------=_NextPart_[PartID]
Content-Type: image/gif;
name="[imagename].gif"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-ID: <[AttachmentID]>
[Long display of characters]
The gif maybe a jpg, png or other image format.
The [something] parts will be something specific to the attachment and vary from message to message.
I think we might be getting close to seeing the problem.
Here's the info from the incoming message to my friend:
--_fbbecae1-62e0-461b-98ab-dbd252103d89_
Content-Type: image/jpeg
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-ID: <X.MA1.1203004557@aol.com>
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="ATT7573461111.jpg"
Looks like the image is there when he forwards the message.
Here's the same info from his forward to me:
--_fbbecae1-62e0-461b-98ab-dbd252103d89_
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Looks like it isn't there.
Also interesting, the large link to the Hotmail login web page is also in the message he is forwarding. Looks like this:

Does this help?
Ok. That appears to mean that the image is being filtered out of the message somewhere along the path between your friend and You with Windows Mail.
If your email provider supports a webmail interface to your email you should try looking there for the email and see if the images are displayed.
That will tell us if the problem is a program on your computer or not.
Thanks jd2066. We tried your suggestion and the image did not come through to the ISP VisualOffice email, but the Hotmail login did.
