I'm a college student considering purchasing Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade Red Edition (http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx).

Two questions:

1. I'm currently running Vista Home Premium which came installed on my Toshiba laptop and experience few problems. As long as my computer meets the specs for Ultimate, would upgrading my be likely to OS introduce problems that weren't present on my computer before?

2. Do these upgrade packages take off the old OS and put on the new one, or is it installed more like an update such as SP1?

Thanks,
Dr. Geekyburger

1. Updating to Ultimate should not introduce any problems.
2. I think it's more like an update that just adds the Ultimate features.
Note: This is based on what I have read about it. I have not done an upgrade myself so I can't be 100% sure.

You just while booted in Windows Vista Home Premium put in the Windows Vista Ultimate disc, select upgrade, follow the wizard and it's upgraded.

Windows Vista Ultimate offers all of the features found in Windows Vista Home Premium, including Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker with high-definition support, and Windows DVD Maker. It also offers all of the features found in Windows Vista Business, including business networking, centralized management tools, and advanced system backup features. And Windows Vista Ultimate has all of the new security and data protection features that help take Windows Vista to a whole new level of dependability.

upgrading will give you a windows.old file from the previous installation. ultimate has a lot of things home premium doesnt, but most of them i rarely used. i do like the complete system restore. you get more sounds, vista glass is good. there's animated wallpaper but the novelty wore off after a while.
im pretty sure you do the install while signed in, i don't remember if it will let you reformat during installation. i went through windows anytime upgrade and paid $150, and after i've reinstalled vista several times i haven't put ultimate back on. there wasn't anything in ultimate i really had to have.

Upgrading from one version of Vista to another does not give you a windows.old file from a previous install. It merely upgrades the OS. I have upgraded from Business to Ultimate on my desktop and can speak from experience.

You probably booted to the DVD instead of upgrading from within the previous OS like you should normally do for an upgrade.

@DrGeekyBurger

You mentioned having problems with your existing Vista install. Are you telling us that the reason you're upgrading is to "fix" the problems?

No. I said I had "few problems". I am an experienced user and am actually quite satisfied with Vista. Although it would be nice if it could fix the problems I had, I'm not expecting it to. My upgrade would be due to my satisfaction of the product.

One question for anyone who might know...considering I bought the computer with Vista Home Premium already installed, can I do a fresh reinstall of Vista if ever necessary with this upgrade disc? I'm assuming otherwise based on jd2066 information.

i had the original vista home premium disk and ugrade to ultimate and i was able do a fresh install using both. you have to reinstall both. after you install ultimate you can set up a complete restore and use that as a new reinstall/back-up if anything happens in the future.
