Microsoft pulls Vista SP1 update?

Uhoh.. Vista SP1
(12 posts)Taybay, thanks for the posting. Now I know why I had several unexplainable problems since this bugger was installed. The bad part is, they don't let you uninstall it. The uninstall button does not come up when you highlight it (it does with all the others). If anyone has figured out how to get rid of the bugger, let me know.
The blog post mentioned in that article says "Customers who may be experiencing this issue can use system restore to correct it or contact 1-866-PC-Safety for help troubleshooting. Additional guidance will be available via Microsoft's free Update Support Center soon."
System Restore seems a bit much to remove an update but if the update isn't under Installed Updates in Control Panel\Programs and Features then it's your only option.
Ok. I have a few updates that don't have an uninstall button either like "Office 2007 Service Pack 1".
I think that means the update doesn't have an uninstaller.
So System Restore or uninstall/reinstall is the only way to remove it.
Microsoft must thought there was no need to make one for that update.
@smash, no, that does not work either.
Just talked to Microsoft. They seem to be aware of the mess. It requires the manipulation of 2 registry keys to get rid of the bugger. Apparently there is some interdependency with some other updates. The guy seemed to know what he is talking about. He will send me the info in an email. Once I know more, I'll post it.
@jd System Restore to an ealier shadow is not what I'd like to do. Apart from loosing some of the Program installs I have made in the meantime, the bugger will come back with the next update cycle and you are back to square 1. I just want to uninstall it and next time my Spybot tells me that they want to change my registry, I'll say "deny".
Ok. I wouldn't want to do System Restore either. I assumed because that page only listed System Restore that is all you can do to uninstall it.
I didn't know there was another way you could get from talking to Microsoft to remove it.
Microsoft has made updates before that could only be removed with System Restore so I thought that was just one of them.
For not getting the update you should check for updates in Control Panel\Windows Update, right click the update and click Hide.
Trying to block the update with SpyBot will likely cause problems.
jd, yes, hiding the update is the normal way. But with this HP Total Care Update System they just go ahead and install it. So Spybot is my only chance to catch them. Maybe I disable this Total Care system. Seems to make more trouble than what it's worth anyhow.
Btw: I got the mail from MS. But some points are not clear. They will call me tomorrow PM and then I will discuss it with them. Here is what they say: Action Plan:

MPC104, keep looking for unusual things. Mine did go into loops, did not shutdown, could not launch IE or AOL and a few other nits. Each time I had to reboot normally or in safe mode. Very disruptive. Note that my system is rather "complete" with a lot of programs installed and I do all kinds of things. My wife's laptop in contrast is a very basic system and all she does is AOL and Ebay. She has not encountered any problems. So I guess it depends - to answer your question.
