I already have ubuntu 12.04 installed on my laptop and i want to install xp on an external hard drive so it does not occupy space on my laptop's hard drive and i can use it when needed.
how should i go about it?

you have just to connect your external and boot with your windows xp and try installation. Beware of formatting the internal one.

You have to first check in your BIOS whether you can boot from an external drive (USB2, USB3 or eSata). Installing an OS on an USB2 attached disk is no fun. It is far too slow and will work like molasses. Ideally you should go with eSata. If you do not have an eSata port, get a PCI Express card. They cost around $20. But you still have to check your BIOS regarding the Boot capability. If it does not work, you have at least a very fast port.

Example of PCI Express card for eSata: http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....6839328027
