I just installed ubuntu on my notebook (VIA Chipset, VIA Chrome9 (S3) display adapter, VIA High Def Audio). Ubuntu GUI can only function for 30 secs or less, then my notebook will just drop dead. Visited ubuntu.com and it was stated that VIA Chrome9 is not supported yet. However VIA sound was shown up on the device list. I suspect that this audio driver is the culprit, since I also have the same crashing problem with winXP & Vista if I installed audio driver other than the one that came with the computer. So, my question is, how can I disable the audio driver from ubuntu command line?

Just some addition. The ubuntu I installed was gamers edition. I also installed LinuxMint 3.0 and FreeSpire 2.0; I believe those two were built on ubuntu. Mint and spire can run ok but without sound.
