Ubuntu desktop missing

G'day All,
-removed Gaim pkg, wch as You know,in some instances, deletes he dtop.
NBD,as did a reinstall of U7.04...but, if it ever happens again [taps head]
--> What shell command /key combo is used to get into Terminal based install
of <sudo apt-get ubuntu desktop>

I'm confused... your desktop was deleted? Did you get into X Win or Gnome at all?

Normally I just use Alt+F2 within gnome or KDE to bring up the run box, then gnome-terminal or konsole to bring up a console, and then install from there.

Yes, desktop was deleted.
As a v.green newbie,didn't have a clue how to get into X Win or Gnome.
-did a clean install cuz figured the whole all was trashed
Ubi was working flawlessly for 4mos.,[with the exception of Automatix breaking Updates&downloads: but that was solved by using cmd lines in the terminal], so never bothered to read troubleshooting FeistyFawn forum posts in depth

If you can't get to the prompt you can always use Ctrl+Alt+function keys to get to the virtual shells. For instance Ctrl+Alt+F1 or F6 or F7 or whatever.
