Vista comes with some nice green glass folders, but if you get bored of them or want to change an icon, there is an easy way to do so.
This method works the same for *.ico files, but not everyone is aware icons can bestored in a 'icon-library', an *.icl file.
It is just a bunch of icons in one file.
The extension can be changed to *.dll, then it is the same as the default iconlibrary Vista gives us: the file
imageres.dll
If you want to open these files you can download IcoFx.
It can open, edit and save *.icl files.
That is also why I personally prefer to leave the extension *icl.
Ok, here we go:
First rightclick the folder and choose 'properties':
![]()
Go to the tab 'change' (in my case it is 'aanpassen' - fourth tab) and choose 'change icon':
![]()
By default Vista opens shell32.dll :
You can choose one of those icons or browse to your iconlibrary:
![]()
Open it :
![]()
And choose an icon and click OK:
![]()
Then you are back in properties - click OK again.
![]()
And you're done:
![]()
If you want to change to another icon, repeat this and if you want to restore the default icon, you go to properties, same tab and click 'restore default' (in my case 'standaard instellingen herstellen').
![]()
Enjoy ;)
Sarah.
