turn off or standby?

I recently built my machine and was wondering everynight if its better to shutdown, leave on, or standyby the computer. Isn't it bad for the hard drive to spin up everytime I start it. Does standby keep hd running? My computer is too loud at night to keep running personally (5 fans). When its on standby and I turn it on, its on rightaway like it was already on. What is running during this time on standby that doesn't require a fan? Is it ok to leave this way for extended periods of time?

It's really up to you... I always use standby mode just for the ease of use.

Standby actually shuts down everything, including the hard drive, but keeps enough battery going to keep everything in memory.
