OK,

I am unable to play avi. files in Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Media Center, in WMP it plays only the audio (automatic down loading of codecs is enabled in WMP), in WMC in shows an error "missing one or several codecs".
Any suggestions how to remedy this.

Running Vista Home Premium

Try another player (Winamp, Realplayer, Quick time player, VLC Media player - I like this one, etc.). They are all for free on the web.

The AVI format is just a container that holds video and audio. Each of which has it's own format called a codec.
You can use a program like gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) to find out what codec you need.
