Hey guys,

I am currently planning out the parts that i am going to get for a new PC that i want to build. I would like to have a triple monitor display setup. I am thinking all i need to do is get 2 dual DVI video cards (exactly the same) and set them up in SLI mode. then plug the 3 monitors into the DVI ports and I'm done. However, after doing a little research i see a lot of people are using the Matrox - Triple Head To Go. Will i not be able to do it the way i was thinking? Do i have to get the Triple Head To Go? How does one go about setting up a triple monitor display anyhow? I don't game and don't plan to use this for gaming. It's so that i can have multiple applications open and not run out of room. The middle screen would have my main display of windows Vista and the two end screens would have virtual machines displayed on those. One with XP and the other with Ubuntu. Thanks guys.

I don't know about SLI mode but for just three monitors a card with one DVI and a card with two DVI should work.
You may want to wait for an answer from someone else though as I haven't done any dual-monitor or tri-monitor setups with multiple cards. I just think that would work.
The Matrox is just another option that doesn't require getting other graphics cards. Both will work just fine. Though the Matrox ones have some limitations the other way doesn't have. You would have to check the site for more on that.

Also once three monitors are installed you can go to display in control panel and set up the displays to be in the right order.

yeah, I'm thinking it should be that easy. However, i haven't seen anyone do it that way and was curious. I think it may have to do with gaming. I think they do it that way to span the screen across all three monitors to get that surround gaming effect. I don't care about that. Let's see what others say. Thanks JD.

@InDisent, I don't know about running the video cards in SLI mode but you can run three monitors off of two video cards. The article that you linked to is from 04 so it is a little out of date. But the same concepts still apply.

On the triple head to go, I had purchased a dual head to go for one of the partners hear at my firm and the main problem with it was that it took all the monitors and made them into on big display with a resolution of something like 1024 X 1536. This led to the problem of when you maximized a program it would span all of the monitors making it so that you have to adjust each program to fit on a single monitor individually. Some people like this because you can have a background span your monitors. This problem is easily fixed with using the program listed in the HTG article here. I would definitely recommend that you use your dual video card setup for what you want
