Dear whs, Amazing! Not the invasion. Amazing you were there in the middle of history and a dapper group of gentlemen you were:) I sincerely hope you were joking about the unpacking and shoe boxes and whatnot!

techgranny, I was not joking at all. These pictures I had not looked at in years and at first I did not even know where to look for them. There are more, but I would have to do more digging. And the scanner story is true too. I will have to bring it to the dealer tomorrow - after repacking it. Fortunately I still have the original box. So it's easy. Btw, the second gentleman from the right: his name was Kobiakoff (funny that I remember that name after so many years). A Canadian citizen but born in Prague from Russian parents. He spoke Russian and Czech fluently, so he kept us up-to-date what everybody was saying. Information was essential in those days. We were stuck there for 3 days because the Russians had blocked all the bridges over the Moldau river - and those we had to cross to get either to Germany, or to Austria where our office was. I could write a book about it.

whs, I'm really surprised you haven't written a book. You seem to have done everything else and have more material than most authors! You shouldn't have gone to all that trouble just for me, but since you did, can I save your pictures for my personal Prague folder? (it's as close as I'll ever get to Prague and all my pictures are black and white stills.)

techgranny, of course, you can save the pictures. And you really should plan a trip there - Prague, Budapest and Vienna. The capitals of the old Austrian/Hungarian monarchy. A lot of history and culture there. And for accomodations you should stay at the Hotel Alcron in Prague, the Hotel Sacher (yummy Sacher torte) in Vienna and Hotel Gellert in Budapest. All very centrally located and you will not be disappointed - old world charm with modern amenities.

Granny. Here's something you might like (specifically the "New Europe") :)

whs and Lighthouse, Thank you and Thank you. You're both very sweet:) Oh, and if you think I'm joking about wanting to be called Oma, I'm not. I've already changed my user name in other places. (can't do it here) It's pithy and easy to type...doesn't get any better than that!

Out of interest oma
what prompted the sudden change of stance on your name?
do you get people in real life to call you it too? (ie when actually talking)
