Hello,

I've built a few computers and wouldn't consider myself a novice, however, I always like to hear other's thoughts. I'm looking to built a 'large' memory linux machine, and have pieced together the machine listed by part below. Any thoughts on this? In particular with regard to the mobo and memory?

Thanks in advance,

Charles

Hey ccook, welcome to Howtogeek (HTG)! you have a nice build.. You will need a bigger power supply tho.. it will take more than 650w to power that machine. I noticed you signed in a week ago and thought there is a chance you'll come back so i responded. sorry it was soo late.

650W should be fine. I have a 650W Antec PSU (their modular range rather than the EarthWatts) running an i7 920 on the same board as that with a GTX275 and an 8800GT as well as 3 SATA Hard disks, a TV tuner, a wireless card and loads of fans. I do only have 3 sticks of RAM in there rather than 6 but the extra vid card and other PCI cards should make up for that.

Power requirements are over estimated to make up for the poor quality PSUs on the market, that Antec is not one of them.

PS: Why do you need 24GB of RAM? I'm not sure if that motherboard can take more than 12, 2GB in each slot. I'll have a look at my manual when I get home tonight.

Looks OK,but agree-why so much memory- are you calculating to split the atom?

what a beast of a machine! My thoughts, if you are creating a beast, why not go SLi? (If linux supports it?) and I agree a better power supply too, check out thermaltakes website (thermaltake.com) The one you've chosen should be fine as other posts suggest, but save up for an extra week or so and get something more beasty! Just a thought... =)
