The USB port doesn't register any new hardware.

I am trying to instal a new hardware via USP ports (Win XP pro). When I plug in the device, it doesn't register, but it keeps searching for COM port or serial port. Tried all 3 USB ports. USB is 1.0. So I cannot install the drivers any of the hardware, I want to use.

When I plug in or remove the hardware no thing happens in device manager or the screen doesn't refresh. In the Device Manager, no Red or yellow cross or question marks devices. This hardware functioning till a week ago. Immediate history: Some one plugged a mini mouse, into the usual USB port .

When I plug in these devices into another laptop, the hardware is instantly registered. The laptop pops up the "New Hardware Found."

Any suggestions.

You may want to check to see if your Plug And Play service is running.
Click Start > Run> type services.msc then hit ENTER
They are listed alphabetically, scroll down to Plug and Play, is it enabled? If not, then right click on it, select Properties: make sure that Startup Type is Automatic.

What do you mean by "it keeps searching for COM port or serial port"?
Also what hardware are you trying to use?
