I recommend the ones I learned on. The Borrows B5500, the IBM 704 and the IBM 7090/7094 direct couple system.

There is no 'best' OS. It all depends what you are looking for.

Simple = IOS
Complete = Windows 7
Challenging = Linux

How about Linux Mint? Try it in a virtual machine and you can test other OS's too.

Perhaps you find the OS of your taste without having to format or create partions, etc. on your PC.
