I've been experimenting with having my taskbar on the left side because I have such a wide screen on my laptop and so much unused vertical space. However, when I put it on the side, the start button goes to the top. I'm curious if there is any way to reverse it so that the start bar is still on the bottom. I realize that this would mean that if the taskbar was on the bottom, the start button would be on the right, and I've never seen that before. So, I'm not expecting much, but does anyone have an idea?

If you use Windows XP you can try TClock Light.
It can hide the start button and make clicking on the clock open the start menu.
It's main function though is to customize the clock display so if you don't need that you would need to go to misc in options and check "Do Not Customize Clock".
If you are using Windows Vista I have no idea.

This is good. A little confusing, but I think this is what I'm looking for.. maybe even better. Thanks, jd.

taybay, Why don't you put a sidebar in to make use of all that space. You can put a lot of useful stuff into the sidebar. I understand that this is possible in XP too. I think Scott would know how this is being done.

I think taybay is all set. The sidebar I use could not mimic the Start menu.

Yeah. I would possibly use a sidebar, but I already have so many memory hogs running.. I need to do some trimming. Also, I have an icon-less desktop, and a sidebar might disturb the feng shui. =) If I need a sidebar, I'll just resort to the quick launch toolbar. My main concern is browsing the web; a lot of pages are built in portrait format, including this one. I have a sidebar for Firefox, but even with it extended I still have about 2 or 3 inches of wasted space. What a weird development.. wider screens and skinner webpages.

How come you are memory stripped - at $30 for a 1GB Dimm it should be easy to solve that problem - especially if you have an open socket; else you are in for 2 Dimms.

I have 2 gigs in my laptop, and only two slots. If I wanted to upgrade, I would have to ditch both of my old sticks for new ones.. it just feels like a waste =\

I suppose you could just trade one 1GB Dimm for a 2GB Dimm. More than 3 GB's makes no sense anyhow with Vista 32bit. But with 2 GB's you are well served anyhow.
