(Solved) - Taskbar and System Event Notification -- are these related?

After the last batch of Windows 7 Updates my taskbar has changed from Windows 7 Classic to an appearance more resembling Windows 95 (that's the best way I know how to describe it) ... the start button is square and gray, the taskbar is gray, and the system tray is a much more basic appearance.

At the same time, any time I reboot and log on, I get a popup that Windows cannot connect to the System Event Notification Service. I entered those words into this website's search engine and the only thing I found was to reboot, but that doesn't work because the pop-up reappears after EVERY logon.

Are these two problems related? I can't figure out which updates if any, caused this to suddenly happen, or if the updates are responsible at all.

Has anyone experienced any of this? I've restarted numerous trimes and tried a system restore and none of it remedies either of what has happened.

NYCaribou,
---
If no system Restore, please Post content of WindowsUpdate.log.
This will be the problem as there is a Pending Reboot condition with the installer that did go in correctly.
---
The Classic Theme will be easy to fix.

This is my fourth attempt to try and post the log, I tried cutting it into 2 parts and the reply I post simply doesn't appear.

I am going to try and break it up into 3 parts now.

(apparently the log shows nothing for 2/22/10 - 2/25/10. I remember doing a system restore going back to 2/21 a few days ago, probably on 2/26.

It's no use. No matter how much I shorten each portion of the log, the forum throws it out unposted. I have NO FTP capacity of any kind and I will not pay for storage just for one file that's not going to be read more than once or twice. I am completely out of options.

The file is just too humongous, 2/26/10 alone is so massive that even when I tried splitting it into three parts the forum absolutely ***REFUSES*** to post it-- the message gets thrown out unposted.

NYCaribou,
---
AGREE.
---
MY BAD for suggesting posting a log.
---
Best advice is to retrieve valuable data and do a Clean Install or Clean Restore from partition
depending on machine.
---
Set the machine for manual updates and check MS every Patch Tuesday.
---
That way, you can ensure a proper reboot when needed.
---
This machine was Clean Installed around 15 times before I got the PERFECT Install which I wanted. (LOL) (LOL)
---
Best Regards,
Rick P.

Well.... this is as much a mystery to me as anyone else, but...

I rebooted again just to see if it would do anything... and guess what, it did.

My classic taskbar came back and there was no error message about connecting to event notification.

I don't understand it, but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

As good as I am with computers, my knowledge comes from things I've experienced and figured out. Some things I just don't figure out and that's when I ask other people even more knowledgeable than I.

I'm going to mark this solved simply because the problem went away... I just hope this solution KEEPS working if I ever run into it again.
