hi, i'm looking for a starting idea to synchronize documents on a vista and an xp machine sitting 1 mile apart - i guess vista sync center would be able to synchronize a folder sitting on a web disk space such as those provided by google, but the xp machine doesn't have a sync center... so, it seems the vista machine needs to see the xp one, which means installing server software -> would stuff like apache do that? alternatively, would a sync software such as allway (http://allwaysync.com) synchronize web folders?
sorry if these questions are dumb, i'm a total newbie in the field in need, as i said, of a simple idea to start searching in the right direction...

(5 posts)jm, you don't need to run a web server, such as Apache, to have the two systems "see" each other. You can create a VPN using software such as LogMeIn Hamachi, which is free for non-commercial (home) use. I'm sure there are other VPN solutions out there.
Once the VPN connection is established, the two computers are then members of a "local" area network (LAN) as far as they are concerned. Then you can use any sync software that works over a network. Also, VPN traffic is encrypted to prevent anyone from snooping on your traffic.
Rethinking my problem..., in order to avoid having both machines ON at all times (for them to communicate thru a vpn), i realize it'd be more convenient for me to use some kind of web disc space (such as that provided by google), or even my ftpable space, to do my sync episodically - i believe the vista sync center would be able to synchronize a folder sitting on such a space (but i'm not even sure of that) - therefore, the idea would be to install sync software on the xp machine - unfortunately, i just got a reply from allwaysync saying that their software won't synchronize google drives (only local) - in the end my question is: does anyone know of a software that will synchronize remote (is that what you call "non-local"?) drives? (am willing to purchase if necessary) - thanks again - jm
