Hi all. I've got a problem and I'm not sure what the best solution will be.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium, and I have had a problem with copying/moving/deleting files in Windows Explorer using the default Windows copying (etc.) function for a long time. It would hang, and usually just 'not' copy/move/delete the files. For the longest time I used TeraCopy to combat this, but later found out that Vista SP1 was supposed to have fixed this. However Windows Update didn't offer me SP1, so I had to use the stand-alone installation because I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo LI 1818 Laptop, with BIOS verison 1.00APRTTBL.
According to Microsoft's website: "This problem can occur for many different reasons. However, the following reasons are the most common: You use a certain version of the following software or hardware: (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo LA 1703 Notebooks being one of the ones on the list.)
"Windows Update will not offer Windows Vista SP1 to Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo LA 1703 Notebooks that have a BIOS release date of March 14, 2008 or earlier (BIOS revision numbers 8.6T1-0023-M007 or earlier). This block reflects an incorrect power management setting that will be resolved in an updated BIOS revision."
The only "Flash - BIOS" update for the Amilo lI 1818 Notebook on the Fu-Si website is the "BIOS Windows Flash (exe) - Winflash_AMILO Li18xx - Version: 1.14C - Date: 30.07.2007", Clearly before the release date of March 14th 2008. Under "Tools and Utilities" there is "DeskUpdate: Automatic driver update", but even this is dated 24.01.2008. So there appears to be no direct help, unless someone can set me straight?
To try to combat this problem, I downloaded the stand-alone installer for SP1, installed it, and it definitely improved my file copying/deleting etc. abilities, but they're just not right, even now it reguarly hangs and takes an age. My brother's Vista laptop seems to have no problem whatsoever copying files (but then again he's got some kind of HP laptop). At this moment I'm just looking at the possibility of condemning this laptop to the depths of hell and getting a new one which meets my needs.
This introduces a new problem all of its own. My choices are a bit hard for me to make, and I'd appreciate people's feedback.
- Desktop PC (upgradeable parts, but not portable)
VS
- Laptop/Netbook/Notebook (portable, but lower cost is usually in direct proportion to lesser-quality parts inside, which usually can't be upgraded)
Once I've figured out PC or Laptop, I've then got to figure out which OS I want to use.
PROS:
- Windows XP (able to copy files quickly, plays older games without a problem)
- Windows 7 (some good-looking features, some bad-looking ones which might be able to customised to my liking - I customised the hell out of Vista to get it to act how I want it to.)
- "OnLive" (I'm basically only wanting a new machine in order to copy files better from laptop's hardrive-to-my-external hardrive; and for it to be capable of running recent games smoothly (Left 4 Dead PC mods look simply awesome to play. I am a jealous Xbox360-only L4D gamer right now). Therefore OnLive, if it lives up to it's hype, might be a better answer as far as the gaming issue goes.)
CONS:
Windows XP probably won't be able to play the latest games, or I won't be able to find an XP laptop with up-to-scratch graphics/processor etc. I also assume that once Win7 is released, Microsoft are going to be stopping the product support lifecycle soon afterwards to try to sheep-heard people onto Win7.
But on the other hand, Windows7 isn't out yet, is new and might be incompatible with some of my stuff until they get new drivers patched and stuff, and might turn out to be a user-unfriendly piece of crap like "vanilla" Vista was before I customized it.
What would people suggest is my best course of action? Is there a way to patch the Vista machine to handle files better, and I'll then see what OnLive is like instead of looking around for a new laptop? Or if I do look around, should I really be looking at XP or Win7 to meet my needs?
