Hi,
I have Vista Home Premium, X64. I just bought a new laptop. I decided to use what is on it until I know more about the new Window upgrade. I have a startup error 42. Can you tell me what that means? I ignore it, and it goes away, and doesn't seem to be affecting anything. But it is annoying to see everytime I boot in.

Can you tell me what it is, and how to get rid of it? Or should I just leave it alone?
Thanks,
Gigi

GigiB4gigi hi. If it is a new laptop, then send/take it back. Demand a a new one, or have them fix it.

Hi Gigi, could you type msconfig in the search box and tell us what programs are running at startup please. Matt

EDIT: Just missed LH´s post, it would be advisable to take the laptop back if it´s brand new!!

sounds kinda drastic to send it back. I have many programs that start, and some of them are completely useless I think, I did the msconfig in the search and found I could eliminate some of them. should I?

I don't think it is the hardware that has a problem.

please advise. I will not delete anything yet.

Could you post a screenshot of your start up programs please.

EDIT: Have a look here on how to post a picture. You can use the snipping tool in Vista to capture a screenshot

I'd try starting is SAFE MODE and see what happens, it might not appear that way and then it might give you a clue.

I'd also go to RUN and run MSCONFIG, and on the STARTUP tab deselect all the items and see if it happens, Doesn't, one of those programs is the cause. Select only 1/2 of them and reboot. Happens, the problem is one of the selected programs, if it doesn't, deselect all those and select the other half. Eventually by do the same thing and reducing by 1/2 each time, you'll identify the culprit. With that info either someone here or the h/w vendor can assist.
