My yahoo messenger starts automatically when my windows starts which is fine. But what i dont like is, the main window(friends list) is left open when it starts. I want it to run in minimize mode like msn messenger.

Is this possible?

Thanks for any help

Right click on its icon, choose properties > Run, scroll down to minimized

Thanks for your reply,

This method doesn't work, messenger still starts up on the screen.

Thanks again!

For what it's worth, I run Pidgin and if I close out the main window (but leave it running in the tray), it starts minimized.

Pidgin supports both, BTW.

Ah. It opens straight with a live feed from Yahoo?

Thanks Scott i'll have a look at Pidgin.

Lighthouse, yes it starts up and shows you which of your friends are online (or not), it also pops up when i'm not connected to the interweb.

So i have to close (minimize to tray) the messenger window everytime i start my computer.

OK. we need to know what is the name of the Yahoo program that is running on startup. Look in
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System Configuration > Startup. and let us know what's there

From what I've just found out. It would be impossible to start this program minimized, without a registry hack. Sorry

I've had so much fun working on this problem (including a total system crash (don't worry, coates719, I love a challenge)).
Here's what I've finally come up with (If you do not understand any part of the following, or need more guidance, please post back)
1) create a restore point
2) In Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System Configuration > Startup. Untick anything that mentions Yahoo
3) reboot
4) Goto Start > All Programs > Yahoo!Messenger. Now drag the Yahoo!Messenger file up to the Startup folder.
5) Right click on the Yahoo!Messenger file in the Startup folder and select properties. Where it says "Run", select "minimized" then Ok, Ok

6) In Yahoo Messenger itself, Click on Messenger > Preferences > General. Untick the top 3 boxes. And as long as you are set to automatically logon, that should be it!

I did find my normal bootup time (30 seconds) went to 4 minutes with Yahoo installed

Thanks Lighthouse you've done exactly what i asked for.

I was hoping that messenger would start in the system tray so i wouldn't have any window to close after startup.

Messenger minimizes to the system tray and i was hoping this is where it would start if it started it minimized.

Thanks for all your help, i need to learn to phrase my questions better when i ask them.

Cheers!
