Start a new paragraph

Not sure if I have a faulty keyboard or just a faulty brain, but when I try to start a new paragraph in a post such as this one I can't seem to find the correct way to do so. Tried using the tab key, but the cursor ends up at the beginning of the line I have just typed. I then try to use the arrow keys to move the cursor where I want it and get no response. Please help.
