last night i messed around and finally was able to get dual monitors to work on ubuntu through the ati catalyst control center. who would have thought to look there? obviously not me.
BUT, this version of ubuntu is really slow compared to hearty heron. is there a way to shut things down or configure anything to make it run faster?

Go under synaptic package manager and look for xubuntu-desktop. I hear fluxbuntu-desktop is super fast as well.

it doesn't detect a cd-rom, my keyboard language (after setting it up 3 times) and it wants to save an error report to a floppy, web, or "cd-rom". it won't go any further. i'll see if i can transfer it to a flashdrive

fuxbuntu is geared towards pcs even older than your's. I'd go with Xubuntu-desktop.
