I have checked with Lowell and to paraphrase, advertisers can include surveys.
No one really likes seeing them but are part of the biding process.

The landing spaceship thing is an ad that is currently running on the main site.

It should not be appearing all the time though, as it sets a cookie to prevent it running more than once every day or week or something. If you clear your cookies all the time, I imagine it will show up more often.

My recommendation: if you really hate ads, feel free to use an ad blocker.

Thanks for the report. It really is scary and I hope it doesn't scare anyone away. That would be counter productive.
