Slow internet with low percent CPU use

Running IE7 or Firefox after cleanup of disk, spyware removal, removal of unused programs, registry cleanup, and speedup processes improved some website processing but secure websites very slow.

Using Process Explorer, it shows the CPU is only 2-25% in use while a browser window is "waiting" for a minute or more.

Any ideas on this?

Mysticgeek:
Actually, have rebooted router, run without add-ons, reset IE7, tried connection on firefox. All changes did not benefit slow connection to secure sites or improve download efforts (mostly time out). So the standard approaches don't seem to be useful thus far.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
F

What is your Internet Service Provider?

Comcast.
Note that another computer on same router connects/downloads normally.

Ok. I guess it's not the Internet Service Provider then if another computer on the router works normally.
I'm not sure what else to say though. It sounds like you have covered many things.
You could try switching the cables hooked to the router and see if it's just one port that isn't working right. It's unlikely but it's my only idea at the moment.

Thanks. I did try that early on w/o effect, unfortunately.

Did you try with just that computer plugged in and the other unplugged?
Also have you tried just plugging the Comcast modem connection into the computer bypassing the router?
If the connection works when the router is bypassed then it's possible the router isn't working right.

Thanks a lot. I hadn't tried plugging into the modem directly, and that took care of the problem. I still don't understand why the router works for other computers, but not this one. I did check each port individually, and all work on the other computer. Nonetheless, I guess I'm in for a new router.

Thanks again for your help, jd2066.

Frank, glad to hear your problem is solved. Now, can you tell us what kind of router it is that caused the trouble? That way we can avoid, or at least be cautious about, 1) buying it and 2) recommending it. Thanks.

Router was old (Linksys B level), and so from what I hear, lasting 5 years was pretty good.
New problem though. I've replaced it with a Linksys N and set it up fine for the base computer. However, the other hard wired computer IE7 program does not recognize the connection. The network connection on the computer itself indicates a connection at the 100 mbps speed. I've run through the tools menu a dozen times resetting the LAN, redoing the connection, etc. Still not recognized. Aarghh, and my wife (her computer has the problem) is much less than happy.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried to run your wife's PC (if it is a laptop) thru the WiFi (g protocol) rather than hard wire it?

Go to the IE > Tools > Internet Options > "Connections" button above > Setup > "Setup new connection"

Thanks, but I've done that a dozen times. According to network connections, I established a LAN (100 mbps) and when that didn't go, I established a direct connection from port 2 of the router, also showing 100 mbps. Clearly I don't know what I'm doing now.

What I mean by network connections is the windows program. The IE7 does not recognize it after it is done.

You have my sympathy. I am out of ideas too - especially with the PC being hard wired, the router really only acts as a switch. Disconnect your own system once and see whether your wife's works. Maybe it wants some sort of LAN setting with both systems connected.

For anyone interested, the situation is resolved through renting a geek. Something of a trade secret as to what resolved it, but I did upgrade the router as part of the solution. However, in redoing a laptop to go with the new router, I used the "Network Magic" program which did indeed seem like magic in configuring the laptop and its wireless receiver when I could not do it for some reason. I wonder if it could have resolved the previous problem. Back to normal with lots of restore points, just in case.
