Slow internet. How to make it go faster?

Hello,

I have ADSL Broadband internet. It is connected to a second computer and then wirelessly connected to my computer using a Netgear USB receiver.

I just recently formatted my computer last week. Before this the internet connection was very fast and quick. But now after I installed all the software and Netgear drivers etc on to my compter, it is really slow and takes a long time to load the page.

The other computer that is connected to the wall has very fast connection.

How can I speed up my internet connection and make it faster?

Before you attempt any fixes, try running this, http://www.speedtest.net/ , from the site closest to your home.

Scott, nice speed test -- very snazzy graphics. I have used this one, too, which is less frilly but gives similar results:

With two speed tests you can always get a second opinion.

I done the speed test. It said the my download rate is 62Kbps and my upload is 57Kbps.
Is this good? Also is there anything i can do to make the internet connection go faster or is it out of my control?

62 and 57 is quite slow. On mine, for example, it is 5100 and 375 Kbps.

I have an 20MB connection (which means around 700KB download speed)
I did 5 tests this morning from test sites in US (I'm in France)
and was getting download speeds between 87 and 4400KB
go figure

Has to be dial up,I checked mine out of curiosity and download was around 15,000kbps,upload about 1,400kbps.Would these readings be normal for cable broadband?

Isn't ADSL2+ similiar to dsl broadband connected to a phone line?

sparky, your's is exceptionally fast. You are lucky. You must have a 16000 DSL.

I tried DSL at my roomies request(less expensive)and that nearly started WW 3. We switched back to cable within a month.

@sparky. Yes, we only got ADSL in this area last year (about March time). The company had to get 250 local subscribers before they could install it.

I've seen ads on t.v about satellite connections. Gethughes.net or something similiar.Don't know the cost or how well it works.Some kind of wireless internet from outer space,I'd think that be up Lighthouse's alley.

Waiting for some software my roomie bought online that's suppose to optimize internet performance. I tried the free scan the other day and it seemed to have boosted my machine somewhat. I think it's called PC Pitstop Optimize 2.0. http://pcpitstop.com/

I'm in Moscow (Russia) and I got 251kb/s and 243 kb/s, which means that my current internet company is not a bunch of liars. I get what I pay for.

Don't know what living in Russia has to do with who lies or doesn't.I've tried various test sites which aren't owned by my ISP,and I get different results.Bottom line is that I can reach various web sites at under 5 seconds,and that's good enough for me.
