Hi all,

For some time now my windows sidebar is not starting automatically. I have to start it every time through Help and Support. Probably my Registry Cleaner might have done some damage. I am using CCleaner. When I use the Built in "Manage Start up Programs" i find that Sidebar is listed but in the comments column it says "Unavailable". How can I get it to autostart once again?

Hi ankur1408, Try this: Start Sidebar, right click Sidebar icon in taskbar, click properties, tick
Start Sidebar when Windows Starts if it isn't already, click apply, then click OK.

It's possible maybe that CCleaner might have caused it. I use it myself without any problems.
Did you do any registry backups when you ran CCleaner? If you did, you could try merging them back in
and see if that helps. Outside of that I'm out of ideas.

One other thing. Do you have sidebar enabled in software explorer?

Click Start > Windows Defender > Tools > Click Show for all users > Highlight Windows Sidebar. ( click it )
If Sidebar is disabled click Enable.

This seems to be pointing back to registry problem. You said this has been going on for some time.
How long?

its been going on for around 15 days. my laptop is just 2 months old. actually i was having problems with codec packs which were causing my "photos screensaver" to stop working and also the error message that "COM has stopped working". So through this forum only i got to know about vista codecs and i installed it. the problems reduced but were not completely eliminated. then i came to know about CCleaner and i ran it to remove unused registries and stuff. All my problems were solved but then this sidebar problem started

Sorry that didn't help. Maybe a more experienced member can sort this out for you.
The only other thing I can think of is doing a reinstall of Vista. Only as a last
resort, though.

thanks a lot for your time...However I dont think think that I will be going for reinstalling vista for this minor problem. i can live with having to start sidebar manually everytime i start windows but i dont want to get into the hassles of backing up 120 gb of data and then reinstalling vista

Hi ankur1408,

If the option to start sidebar with windows is already checked, uncheck it and re-check it the next time you startup. Sometimes that corrects faults like this:)
